New York CPA ethics CPE questions

How many hours of ethics CPE do New York CPAs need?

Four contact hours of acceptable professional ethics during each three calendar years preceding your licence expiration. Those four credits may also be counted toward your 24- or 40-hour requirement for the calendar year in which you complete them.

Does my ethics course have to be approved by New York specifically?

It depends where you practise. If your primary place of business is in New York, the ethics course must be approved by NYSED. Otherwise the credits may be earned from a New York-approved sponsor, a NASBA sponsor, or a provider approved in your principal place of business.

Can one ethics course cover both New York and another state I am licensed in?

Sometimes. If your primary place of business is in New York, the course must be NYSED-approved and a course approved elsewhere will not do. If your primary place of business is outside New York, credits from a NASBA sponsor or a provider approved in your principal place of business may satisfy New York as well.

When is my New York CPE due?

CPE is earned on a calendar-year basis, 1 January to 31 December, even though the licence itself renews triennially. Renewal is based on your date of issuance, or on your birth month if you were licensed before 1 January 1993.

Can I carry unused hours into the next year?

No. New York does not permit carryover, and the annual requirement must be met within each calendar year.

Do my four ethics credits also count toward my annual requirement?

Yes. The four ethics credits may be counted toward your 24- or 40-hour requirement for the calendar year in which you complete them, so they do double duty.
